Install Metal Railings On Concrete Stair Treads
The railings make the stairs safer giving you something to stop and prevent a fall. Contact the Building Department in your city for the recommended height for railings. In most places, the standard measurement is 30 inches tall on the steps and up to 34 inches at the landings. These safety barriers are typically installed on the right side of the concrete stair treads. Purchase equipment including railings balusters, handrails, lower guides and intermediate balusters. Place guardrails on concrete steps are a moderately easy task.
Measure the distance between the vertical balusters, using the tape measure. Make marks with a pencil on the right side of the steps the location for the brackets where you will place the balusters for concrete stair treads. Make pilot holes with masonry bit. Use the media as guides to know where to drill the holes.
Place the brackets above the aligning pilot holes. Hold the metal rungs with anchors and bolts for masonry. Place the vertical balusters brackets and attach them with tightening screws with the key. Ensures each piece with screws and tighten them with the wrench or a screwdriver.
Install Concrete Stair Treads
Concrete stair treads – Concrete is a robust step tread material with an abrasive surface to improve traction on the stairs. Concrete steps are prefabricated to fit in metal stair stringers. Bolt-on steps are a simple design solution for the do-it-yourself homeowners because they require no mortar for installation. Instead bolts secure steps to the angle tabs on runners, which are welded in place at each tread spot. A metal railing attaches to concrete steps with a base plate and anchor bolts for safe stair use.
Install concrete stair treads, align the bolts on the concrete steps with bolt holes on the metal angle tabs and lower tread in place. The steps are prefabricated with the bolts in the concrete, so there is no need to drill and put the bolts. Tighten the nuts on the bolts from the underside of each step. The nuts must be the same size as the bolts are used, usually 3/8 to 1/2 inch nuts.
Tighten each nut with a wrench until secure, but not tighten the nut. Over tightened nuts put too much pressure on the concrete steps, which increases the risk of cracking the steps. Continue to install concrete stair treads, working from the bottom to the top, until all steps are installed.
